This tutorial will guide you through how to make a simple knit dress under an hour.
Knit Fabric, Scissors, Pins, Chalk, Fitted Vest, Sewing Machine and Thread
Fold fabric into 2 with the salvage ends lining side by side. It could be right side together or the wrong side together depending on which one you choose.
Lay fabric flat on the table, still folded with the two salvage ends together. This enables even and easy cut.
Look for a nice fitted vest and place it on the fabric. Just like the photo below allowing enough space at the bottom for extra length.
Trace round the vest with a chalk and when you get to the bottom part you can lengthen the dress
to the desired length. Mine is a short dress so I just added 12″ to my vest.
Cut out the traced mark with a half inch seam allowance. You will have 2 pieces of cut out fabric because the fabric was folded into 2.
1/2 ” seam allowance away from the marker just like the photo below.
Fold in half inch fabric to the wrong side at the arm hole and the back neck and sew.
The neck of the front and back fabric are the same, so we have to lower the front neck.
To do so, fold the front fabric into two with the armholes laying on each other just like the photo below.
Measure out 2″ and mark it as a curve to the shoulder. You can lower the neck as much as you like by increasing the length from 2″ to the desired length.
Cut out and fold in by repeating Step 6.
Put the two fabrics together right side on each other and pin along to hold the fabric to prep it for sewing.
Sew along the 2 sides and the shoulder.
Fold in the bottom of the dress 1/2 ” and sew around.
Here is the finished dress.
